It would be lovely to share any responses and thoughts you may have through our comments section below. Experience suggests that sustained attention and contemplation of a poem’s music, words and thoughts can be deeply rewarding. But there is also the possibility that staying with something that does not immediately appeal can be stimulating and helpful. Of course, not every poem will appeal to everyone – that is inevitable. “… goes back very far: the rune the chant the incantation the spell the kenning sacred words the naming of the child the plant, the insect, the ocean, the configuration of stars, the snow, the sensation in the body… The physical reality of the human voice.” It has a magic, which, in the words of poet Adrienne Rich: And so we drive ourselves and want to achieve it, want to hold it in our simple hands, in the surfeited gaze and in the speechless heart. For poetry has the power to affect us on every level – body, mind, heart and soul. We can read it – perhaps aloud – to ourselves or to any companions in our isolation, and sense the vibrations through our whole being. There will be just one poem each week, so that we can really stay with what is offered. It is intended as a way of sustaining us, and to give us something on which to meditate together during these difficult and challenging times. ‘Poems for These Times’ is a special collection of poetry offered in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meatiest sections, unsurprisingly, deal with Tales of the City, a string of novels that started as a newspaper serial, first in Marin County’s Pacific Sun in 1974, then two years later in the San Francisco Chronicle‘s inside back page. Kroot breaks down the film into titled chapters marked by animator Grant Nelleson’s colorful ‘ 70s-style graphics. But limited as it is, the issue is sufficiently contextualized to introduce a welcome edge of contention into what’s otherwise a breezy love letter. It steps a tad too gingerly over the thornier elements, such as Maupin’s outing of gay and lesbian celebrities - most notably erstwhile fling Rock Hudson when the Hollywood star was dying of AIDS-related causes. As much as the gentlemanly Southern charm of Maupin, now 73, and the lively interviews of famous friends and colleagues, it’s the fabulous archival material, summoning all the sexy swagger of the Castro back in its heyday, that makes the film so enjoyable. And Wayne seemed so wrong she hadn't even tried. Watson had prompted him to do a very bad Sherlock Holmes impersonation throughout a good portion of a train ride to Edinburgh, Scotland. He'd firmly denied both Warren and Waverly. "So far Kat has been through all the W's she could think of, but Hale hadn't admitted to being Walter or Ward or Washington. Schwab was in the midst of a promotional tour for Vengeful, the second book in her Villains series, with the launch of her middle grade fantasy series City of Ghosts just around the corner, but she couldn’t help but also mention then work-in-progress The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.
